CD6 special: Former President Trump took credit for Saturday’s special election results, which placed Republicans Susan Wright and state Rep. Jake Ellzey (R-Waxahachie) into a runoff. “Please explain to the Democrats and RINOs that the reason Texas-06 completely shut out Democrats in Saturday’s Jungle Primary is because of my Endorsement of Susan Wright, who surged last week after receiving it,” Trump said in a statement.
Our preliminary analysis suggests Trump’s late endorsement indeed vaulted Wright into first place. She and Ellzey (R-Waxahachie) were virtually tied in early voting with 7K votes each. She received nearly 8K votes on Election Day compared to less than 4K for Ellzey. Wright was the only top-five candidate to receive more votes on Election Day than in early voting.
The runoff could become a referendum on the former president. 2020 Democratic nominee Stephen Daniel tweeted that he would vote for Ellzey. “Ds may be the deciding factor in this election,” and could keep the Trump-endorsed candidate from winning, Daniel said
Fort Worth: U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Fort Worth) endorsed Deborah Peoples in the mayoral runoff. Peoples is the Tarrant Co. Democratic Party chair.
Census: The state of Alabama agreed to drop a lawsuit and U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) filed to compel the U.S. Dept. of Commerce to exclude undocumented immigrants from the Census. The state had been projected to lose a congressional seat when the action was filed in 2018, but the state maintained its eight seats after the 2020 apportionment. The state could not demonstrate injury if it did not lose a seat.
A separate federal suit regarding differential privacy measures remains pending. The Census Bureau intends to use statistical techniques to protect the privacy of individuals, but the effect causes variances from the actual numbers and characteristics of people at small geographic levels, such as census blocks and voting tabulation districts, which are used for redistricting.
