CD13 open: Ronny Jackson leads Josh Winegarner, 49%-41%, among “likely Republican run-off election voters,” according to a new WPAi poll (PDF) conducted for the pro-Jackson Club for Growth Action PAC. Both candidates are viewed favorably by voters with Jackson (59/12) having a slight edge over Winegarner (56/16). Just over two of out of every three respondents correctly identified Jackson as the candidate endorsed by President Trump, more than double the number from a May survey, which found Winegarner leading Jackson, 47%-36%. Club for Growth has spent at least $250K in the race, primarily focusing on Trump’s endorsement. The poll of 408 “likely” runoff voters was in the field June 17-18 and conducted via live interviews over cell phones (62%) and landlines (38%). The stated margin of error is ±4.9%.
Wise Co. Sheriff Lake Akin (R) endorsed Winegarner.
CD24 open: The campaign of Democratic runoff candidate Kim Olson released a new ad, “Battles,” highlighting her military service and efforts to help veterans.
Harris Co.: Teneshia Hudspeth, the chief deputy in the Harris County Clerk’s office, announced she would run for county clerk. Hudspeth was passed over by Harris Co. commissioners to succeed Diane Trautman, who resigned for health reasons, on an interim basis. Commissioners instead selected attorney and Texas Democratic Party vice finance chairman Christopher Hollins, who assured commissioners that he would not be a candidate in the November special election to fill the final two years of Trautman’s term.
Waco: The city council appointed real estate agent Darius Ewing to succeed Dillon Meek as the District 4 council representative. Meek, who is running for mayor, had to resign his seat because he no longer resides in the district. Meek was under contract to sell the house in his district and purchase one outside the district before the May general election was postponed to November. Ewing will serve the remaining year of Meek’s unexpired term.
