SC2: President Trump nominated Justice Don Willett to a vacancy on the federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Willett is up for re-election in 2018. He has won re-election twice since being appointed to the court by former Gov. Rick Perry in 2005.

In a tweet, fittingly, Willett said he had “No words. I am honored and humbled.”

Trump also nominated former Solicitor General James Ho to the Fifth Circuit. The nominations require U.S. Senate confirmation.

SD8 open: Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) endorsed Angela Paxton.

SD17: Missouri City attorney and Fort Bend ISD board president Kristin Tassin established a campaign committee for a potential primary challenge of Sen. Joan Huffman (R-Houston). Tassin was first elected to the school board in 2014 and was re-elected in May. Her social media feed shows a strong opposition to vouchers, and an op-ed penned by Tassin criticized Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) for the Legislature’s failure to pass school finance reform.

Burnet Co.: Russell Graeter, who has served as P2 county commissioner since 2002, announced he would not seek re-election. “I am looking forward to the next opportunity, whatever that may be,” he told fellow commissioners at their open meeting.

Mission: Mayor Beto Salinas announced he would seek re-election in May. Salinas was first elected mayor in 1998.
