SEN: Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) met with U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and staff of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. West is expected to make a decision on whether he will challenge U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R) next month. According to the Texas Tribune’s Patrick Svitek, West indicated in the meeting that is likely to run.West is not up for re-election until 2022, which means he would not have to leave his state Senate seat if he runs for a U.S. Senate seat.

Local Runoffs: Tomorrow (Saturday) is runoff election in a handful of jurisdictions across Texas. We will be paying particular attention to these runoff elections:

  • Brownsville – at-large council race between John Cowen and Jessica Puente-Bradshaw. Cowen missed winning the May 4 election outright by less than 1% of the vote.
  • Harlingen – incumbent D1 council member Richard Uribe faces former council member J.J. Gonzalez. Eight votes separated them in May.
  • McAllen – incumbent D5 council member John Ingram faces Seby Haddad. Ingram was one vote shy of winning the May 4 election outright; and
  • Port Arthur – Mayor Derrick Freeman faces Thurman Bartie.

We’ll also keep an eye on runoffs in Raymondville and in Rogers, where incumbent Mayor Tammy Cockrum faces her uncle, former Mayor and current council member Billy Ray Crow, following their tied May 4 election. Each received 93 votes.
