More than 16.1M Texans are registered to vote – the largest number in state history – according to new voter registration numbers released by the Secretary of State’s office. Since January 2016, the number of registered voters has grown by 14%, significantly higher than the four-year period ending January 2016 and nearly six times higher than the four-year period ending January 2012.

The number of Texans registered to vote has grown 25% since 2012, nearly 19 percentage points more than during the previous eight years (2004-2012).

Early voting is underway for the three legislative special runoff elections and runs through Friday. In HD28, about 3,600 people voted early on opening day, which is more than during the first four days of early voting in the district in November. In HD148, a little over 2,700 people voted early. Early voting numbers from HD100 were not yet available.

HD28 special: U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R) endorsed Republican candidate Gary Gates. Elizabeth Warren endorsed Democratic candidate Eliz Markowitz, becoming at least the fifth Democratic presidential candidate to endorse her or assist her campaign.

HD45: The National Rifle Assoc. Political Victory Fund endorsed Carrie Isaac for the Republican nomination to challenge Rep. Erin Zwiener (D-Driftwood).

HD60 open: Young Conservatives of Texas endorsed Jon Francis to succeed the retiring Rep. Mike Lang (R-Granbury).

HD128: Young Conservatives of Texas endorsed Rep. Briscoe Cain (R-Deer Park) for re-election. The group also endorsed Reps. Mayes Middleton (R-Wallisville) in HD23 and Tony Tinderholt (R-Arlington) in HD94, neither of whom has a primary opponent.

HD132: The Houston Realty Business Coalition endorsed Angelica Garcia for the Republican nomination over former Rep. Mike Schofield (R-Katy) in the race to challenge Rep. Gina Calanni (D-Katy).

HD135: Gov. Greg Abbott (R) endorsed Justin Ray for the Republican nomination to challenge Rep. Jon Rosenthal (D-Houston).

HD138: The Houston Realty Business Coalition endorsed Lacey Hull for the Republican nomination to succeed the retiring Rep. Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston).

SEN: The campaign of Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) released a new ad, “I Have a Message for Trump.”

CD12: Reps. Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth), Craig Goldman (R-Fort Worth) and Phil King (R-Weatherford) endorsed U.S. Rep. Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth) for re-election. Texans for Fiscal Responsibility/Empower Texans PAC and Young Conservatives of Texas endorsed primary challenger Chris Putnam.

CD32: Former U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Plano) endorsed Genevieve Collins for the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Dallas).
