Rep. Garnet Coleman (D-Houston) has decided not to pursue the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) in order to “remain in the House of Representatives, as one of the most senior members of the body, and chair of the County Affairs Committee and Legislative Study Group caucus,” according to a statement issued by his campaign. Coleman, who is the Democratic nominee for re-election to HD147, faces Houston fire protection engineer and former pro golfer Matt Murphy and a Green Party candidate in the general election.

Reps. Borris Miles (D-Houston) and Senfronia Thompson (D-Houston) and former Houston City Controller Ron Green are the only announced candidates that we are aware of at this time. Democratic precinct chairs residing in SD13 will pick a replacement nominee on July 16.

Update: Our apologies to Rep. Miles. We inadvertently renamed him Morris Miles in our breaking news alert. We regret the error.
