A new Emerson Coll. “e-poll” finds U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R) leading U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-El Paso), 47%-42%, and Gov. Greg Abbott (R) leading former Dallas Co. Sheriff Lupe Valdez (D), 53%-33%. In August, Emerson Coll. found Cruz leading, 38%-37%, and Abbott leading, 48%-28%.

Cruz leads among men, 51%-33%, while O’Rourke leads among women, 50%-43%. Cruz leads among Anglo “likely voters,” 58%-35%, while O’Rourke leads among Hispanic/Latino “likely voters,” 51%-37%, and African-Americans, 74%-14%. O’Rourke leads among “likely voters” under 35, 48%-40%, while Cruz leads among voters aged 55 and over, 53%-40%.

The e-poll of 500 “likely voters” was conducted via interactive voice response over landline phones and using an online panel. It was in the field October 1-5 and has a stated margin of error of ±4.5%. We previously expressed reservations about the Emerson poll’s methodology.

Meanwhile, the Cruz campaign announced the endorsements of 57 more sheriffs, bringing his total to 153.

Deadlines: Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote for the general election. It is also the deadline for state, legislative and local candidates (where applicable) to file their 30-day-out campaign finance reports if they have a general election opponent. These reports cover contributions received and expenditures made between July 1 and September 27.

Voter Guide: The state League of Women Voters released its statewide voter guide, which provides a customized guide based on a voter’s address or location. The guide includes candidates’ responses to the League’s questionnaire. Local Leagues are in the process of updating their local guides.

SD16: Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings endorsed challenger Nathan Johnson over Sen. Don Huffine s (R-Dallas).

HD116: The San Antonio Express-News endorsed former Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer (D-San Antonio).

HD134: The Houston Chronicle endorsed Rep. Sarah Davis (R-Houston).

CD7: The Houston Chronicle endorsed Democratic challenger Lizzie Pannill Fletcher over U.S. Rep. John Culberson (R-Houston).

CD23: The Gina Ortiz Jones (D) campaign released a new ad, “Here’s the Deal,” responding to a series of attack ads from outside groups supporting U.S. Rep. Will Hurd (R-San Antonio).

Plainview: The city council set a November 15 runoff election for a vacant council seat. The election pits Evan Weiss (44%) against Lionel Garcia (38%). Early voting begins October 29 and runs through November 9.
