The filing deadline has passed, but we are still learning about candidates whose filings are just now being, or have not yet been, reported. County and state party chairs are not required to submit candidate information to the Secretary of State until December 21. Our Crib Sheets have the latest information.

GOV (Likely R): Our Texas PAC released a new ad, “Good Enough,” criticizing Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) handling of last winter’s widespread power outages. The ad features critical comments from Agriculture Comm. Sid Miller (R).

LAND open (Likely R): The Texas Oil & Gas Assoc. PAC endorsed Sen. Dawn Buckingham (R-Lakeway).

Independents: Nearly 60 candidates filed declarations of intent to run as independents for statewide, legislative and congressional offices. History suggests very few will complete the process – namely, obtain sufficient valid signatures – to qualify for the ballot in November. It may take us awhile to get the details into our Crib Sheets with all these candidates – many were not on our radar screen prior to filing – but they are all listed.

Of particular interest, it appears that former Rep. Norma Chavez (D-El Paso) filed as an independent to challenge Rep. Lina Ortega (D-El Paso) in HD77 (Safe D).

Austin: Council member Greg Casar, who is running for Congress, endorsed Chito Vela in the special election for his unexpired council term.
