I appreciate the opportunity to discuss the SD1 primary results in a story broadcast on KETK-TV in Tyler this evening. Reporter Nikki Diaz asked me to clarify the status of the race and explain discrepancies in vote counts reported by us and other sources. Rep. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) is also quoted in the story.

We initially reported that Red Brown appeared to have edged out Rep. David Simpson (R-Longview) by one vote to claim a runoff spot against Hughes. We later learned that about a hundred ballots were double-counted in Camp Co. and that the data reported to the Secretary of State included these double counts. We obtained corrected vote counts from the county and concluded that Simpson was six votes ahead of Brown. A recount is expected.
