Potential candidates to succeed Rep. Borris Miles (D-Houston), who was promoted to the Senate on Saturday, have begun to emerge:

  • Erica Lee Carter, an educator and Harris County Dept. of Education trustee first elected in 2012
  • Rashad Cave, whose web site describes him as a motivational speaker, businessman and entrepreneur.
  • James Donatto II, a Greater Houston Black Chamber board member who previously worked in the Houston Mayor’s office; and
  • Shawn Thierry, an attorney who lost a 2010 race for the 157th Civil District Court.

We have seen social media posts about Carter, Cave and Donatto showing logos and other campaign branding. Thierry was one of six candidates vying to be the replacement Democratic nominee for the 507th Family District Court. Harris Co. Democratic precinct chairs ended up narrowly choosing another candidate in a runoff.

Other candidates may step forward. A meeting of the 27 or so Democratic precinct chairs living in HD146 has not yet been scheduled. With the Democratic National Convention coming soon, the meeting will be held August 6 likely to be on or around August 12. The deadline to name replacement nominees is August 26.

Updated July 21 to provide the correct meeting date.
