SD19: As expected, Rep. Roland Gutierrez (D-San Antonio) announced his candidacy for the seat currently held by Sen. Carlos Uresti (D-San Antonio), who is not up for re-election until 2020. Uresti was convicted last month on 11 felony counts including wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in connection with a bankrupt frac-sand company and its executives. He has maintained his innocence and resisted calls for him to resign.
Meanwhile, Uresti’s legal team filed a motion requesting a new trial based on “highly prejudicial” comments made by U.S. District Judge David Ezra, errors in jury instructions and the disqualification of Mikal Watts as Uresti’s counsel.
GOV: Andrew White was endorsed by Cedric Davis Sr., who came in third in the Democratic primary (8%), and Michael Cooper, who narrowly lost the LTGOV primary to Mike Collier (48%).
CD5 open: The Bunni Pounds campaign announced the endorsement of Rafael Cruz.
CD32: Former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk endorsed Colin Allred.
