SC8: Justice Phil Johnson announced he would retire at the end of this year. He would have been up for re-election in 2020. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) will appoint Johnson’s successor, and that appointee will not be on the ballot until he or she seeks a full term in 2020 as the incumbent.

HD138: Rep. Dwayne Bohac’s (R-Houston) lead over challenger Adam Milasincic (D) has fallen to 72 votes. He led by 137 votes when Harris Co. released its “final” unofficial report. Provisional and mail-in ballots continue to be counted after Election night and can change the outcome of close elections.

SEN: U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R) confirmed he will seek re-election in 2020. Cornyn already has at least two challengers. Cleveland business owner Dwayne Stovall, who received 11% of the vote in the 2014 Republican primary against Cornyn, has previously announced he would run again. Pasadena business owner and progressive activist Sema Hernandez, who received 24% in the 2018 Democratic primary, also confirmed she would run in 2020.

CD23: Revised results from Medina Co. have pushed U.S. Rep. Will Hurd’s (R-San Antonio) lead over Gina Ortiz Jones (D) to 1,150 votes. He led by 689 as of about 2:15 a.m. on Election Day. A reporting error earlier in the night made it appear that Jones had prevailed by 282 votes. At that time, we suspected the Medina Co. numbers were incorrect.

CD26: Democratic challenger Linsey Fagan, in a tweet, announced she would again challenge U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Lewisville) in 2020.
