Voter ID: The U.S. Dept. of Justice has asked the federal court overseeing Voter ID litigation to “decline any further remedies” following the Legislature’s passage of Senate Bill 5. The brief completes the federal government’s reversal of its position during the trial phases of the case.

Dukes Sued: The Austin American-Statesman’s Ryan Autullo and other media outlets reported that the state filed a lawsuit against Rep. Dawnna Dukes (D-Austin). The suit seeks to collect an unpaid $500 fine for missing a campaign finance reporting deadline by a day. The Texas Ethics Commission is also seeking interest and attorney fees. The suit claims that Dukes did not pay the fine or file a request to have the fine waived. This civil suit is unrelated to her criminal indictments.

GOV: Houston electronics businessman Joe Mumbach filed paperwork establishing a campaign committee for a potential challenge of Gov. Greg Abbott (R), likely as a Democrat. He recently was an officer of the Sharpstown Democrats Club.

SD5: Round Rock resident Margaret Walsh filed paperwork establishing a campaign committee for a potential challenge of Sen. Charles Schwertner (R-Georgetown). We were unable to determine her occupation or political affiliation.

CD25: Chetan Panda established an ActBlue fundraising page, and his web site has a placeholder logo, for a potential challenge of U.S. Rep. Roger Williams (R-Austin) as a Democrat. We were unable to determine his hometown and occupation.
