Registration Deadline: Tomorrow is the deadline to register to vote in order to participate in the March 6 primary election.

Campaign Finance: Tomorrow is also the deadline for state and county (where required) candidates to file 30-day-out campaign finance reports. Only candidates with primary opponents are required to file these reports, which cover contributions received and expenditures made during the first 25 days of 2018.

In 2016, candidates with primary opponents reported raising $3.7M during the corresponding period of time. They would go on to raise $12.7M more in the next reporting period, which ends eight days before the primary election. Because 30-day-out primary reports cover such a short period of time, we look not only at the numbers but also for big contributions from PACs and individual donors. Large contributions could signify how seriously invested they may be in a particular race. Of course, large donations can also come in the campaign’s final month. In 2016, a group of 10 PACs accounted for more than $4.5 million, or 35%, of all contributions reported for the period.

Most of these reports will become available online during the day Tuesday. We will update our Crib Sheets and Hot Races lists during the day as we explore the reports. Expect to see a couple of breaking news reports during the day.
