Early voting begins tomorrow (Monday) for the HD79 and HD145 special elections. Just three weeks have passed since the elections were ordered by Gov. Greg Abbott (R), giving candidates very little time to connect with the likely low number of voters.

HD125 special: Tomorrow (Monday) is the filing deadline for candidates to enter the special election.

HD145 special: The Houston Chronicle endorsed former Houston council member Melissa Noriega.

Municipal Elections: Filing for local offices on the May 4 uniform election ballot begins Wednesday. The mayors and entire councils of Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio are on the May 4 ballot. Other larger cities with mayoral elections include Amarillo, Arlington, Brownsville, Edinburg, El Paso, Harlingen and Victoria. We have compiled a list of offices scheduled to be on the ballots this year for every Texas municipality with at least 25K residents.

Dallas: Former Rep. Jason Villalba (R-Dallas) has planned a “major announcement about a new challenge” for Tuesday morning at his grandmother’s South Dallas house. It is widely speculated that this announcement will be his official entry into the mayoral race.

PRES: Former San Antonio Mayor and U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro announced he would seek the Democratic nomination for president. Castro was not the only Texan to take a formal step toward launching a presidential campaign this weekend. Rockwall resident Christopher Brainard established a campaign committee to mount a potential primary challenge to President Trump.
