CD27 open: Republican nominee Michael Cloud and his former runoff opponent Bech Bruun are expected to appear together at the Nueces Co. Republican Party headquarters for an announcement regarding the June 30 special election to fill the unexpired term of former U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Corpus Christi). Bruun is not campaigning for the special election, but another Republican, Corpus Christi physician Marty Perez, is also on the ballot. Three Democrats, a Libertarian and two independent candidates are also on the special election ballot. Bruun and Cloud will also address “the importance of voter turnout throughout” the district, according to a post on Bruun’s Facebook page. Early voting begins June 13.

Motor Voter: The Office of the Attorney General filed an emergency motion on Friday with the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The state seeks a stay on a lower court ruling ordering the state to create an online system permitting Texas to register to vote when they obtain or renew their driver’s licenses.

McLennan Co.: The independent candidate for district attorney is ending his campaign following his disclosure of an error on his ballot application. Daniel Hare mistakenly filed his candidacy paperwork with the McLennan County Judge instead of the Secretary of State. State law requires most candidates for county office to file with the county judge, but candidates for district attorney must file with the Secretary of State. Hare’s withdrawal leaves Republican Barry Johnson, who defeated incumbent Abel Reyna in the primary, as the lone candidate for the office.

Laredo: Mayor Pete Saenz announced he would seek re-election in November. He was first elected in 2014.

Mission: Early voting is underway for the runoff elections for mayor and council P4. Incumbent Mayor Beto Salinas (49.95%) faces council member Armando Ocana (42%) after falling just 3 votes short of an outright win. Early voting runs through June 5. Election Day is June 9.
