GOV: Houston council member Dwight Boykins said in a statement that he is considering running against Gov. Greg Abbott (R) as a Democrat. He was first elected to the council in 2013. Meanwhile, Flower Mound resident Patrick “Not” Smith established a campaign committee for the race. A manifesto posted to his campaign’s web site indicates his primary policy goal is the elimination of state government. It is unclear if he is running as a Libertarian or independent candidate.

SD8 open: The Texas Home School Coalition endorsed Angela Paxton.

HD8 open: Streetman business developer and college instructor Linda Timmerman established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by Rep. Byron Cook (R-Corsicana) as a Republican. We previously reported she was considering the race.

HD13: Carmine military retiree and State Democratic Executive Committee member Cecil Webster re-established his campaign committee for a potential rematch against Rep. Leighton Schubert (R-Caldwell). Webster received 13% of the vote in a 2015 special election for the seat and 21% in the 2016 general election.

HD67: Gov. Greg Abbott (R) endorsed Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano).

HD121 open: San Antonio attorney Steve Allison established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by Speaker Joe Straus (R-San Antonio). Past campaign contributions – many of them going to Straus – suggest he would run as a Republican.

CD3 open: Richardson college professor David Niederkorn established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Plano) as a Republican.

CD21 open: San Antonio nonprofit executive Bill Negley established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-San Antonio) as a Republican. He is a former CIA intelligence officer and former legislative aide to former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R).

CD23: Emily’s List endorsed Gina Ortiz Jones in the Democratic primary to face U.S. Rep. Will Hurd (R-San Antonio).

CD29 open: Houston attorney Roel Garcia established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Gene Green (D-Houston). He is the third person named Garcia to take a formal step toward entering the Democratic party, joining Pearland commercial listing agent Dominique Garcia and Sen. Sylvia Garcia (D-Houston). Former Harris Co. Sheriff Adrian Garcia is considering the race.
