GOV: Dallas Co. Sheriff Lupe Valdez (D) is considering resigning her office as early as the end of next week in order to seek the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Earlier news reports that she had resigned proved premature. Meanwhile, Houston investor and entrepreneur Andrew White said he would make an announcement about the race next week. His social media activity has strongly suggested he will also seek the Democratic nomination.

SD30: An internal poll conducted for the Pat Fallon (R-Frisco) campaign shows a statistical dead heat between him and incumbent Sen. Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls), but more than two out of every five likely primary voters are undecided. The Wickers Group poll follows three weeks of television, radio and digital media advertising in the district focused on sanctuary cities (video) and illegal immigration (video).

HD3: Waller dairy farmer Lisa Seger established a campaign committee for a potential challenge of Rep. Cecil Bell Jr. (R-Magnolia), likely as a Democrat.

HD45 open: Wimberly emergency medical service corporation director and Wimberly ISD board member Ken Strange announced he would seek the seat being vacated by Rep. Jason Isaac (R-Dripping Springs) as a Republican.

HD73: Fredericksburg manufacturer and Fredericksburg ISD board vice president Dave Campbell established a campaign committee for a potential primary challenge of Rep. Kyle Biedermann (R-Fredericksburg).

HD130: Cypress resident Robin Conklin established a campaign committee for a potential challenge of Rep. Tom Oliverson (R-Houston) as a Democrat.

ED7 open: Rosharon resident Marvin Johnson established a campaign committee for a potential run for the State Board of Education but did not indicate which seat he might seek. Rosharon is located in ED7, which is being vacated by board member David Bradley (R-Beaumont). We were unable to identify him conclusively.

CD5 open: Retiring U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Dallas) endorsed Bunni Pounds, his longtime fundraiser and political consultant, to succeed him. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Dallas) endorsed former Rep. Kenneth Sheets (R-Mesquite).

CD6: Sen. Konni Burton (R-Colleyville) released a statement urging U.S. Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis) to retire so that the seat may remain in conservative hands and endorsed Tarrant Co. Tax Assessor-Collector Ron Wright (R), who is not up for re-election in 2018.

CD21 open: Bexar Co. Republican Party Chair Robert Stovall established a campaign committee and announced he would resign next week when he files to become a candidate in the crowded race to succeed the retiring U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-San Antonio). We previously reported that Stovall had announced his intention to run.

CD22: Missouri City business developer and Fort Bend Co. Democratic Party chair Steve Brown established a campaign committee for a potential challenge of U.S. Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land). Brown unsuccessfully challenged Rep. Ron Reynolds (D-Missouri City) in the 2016 Democratic primary (19%) and was the Democratic nominee for Railroad Commission in 2014 (36%).
