HD10 special: Thursday is the filing deadline for the August 31 special election. We did not see any new filings reported today (Tuesday). Midlothian rancher Kevin Griffin, Midlothian real estate agent and council member Leland Wickliffe and former Rep. John Wray (R-Midlothian) have filed so far. U.S. Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Irving) endorsed Brian Harrison.

HD5: Talco nurse and retired Army officer Dewey Collier established a campaign committee for a potential primary challenge of Rep. Cole Hefner (R-Mount Pleasant).

HD73: New Braunfels educator and former council member George Green established a campaign committee for a potential primary challenge of Rep. Kyle Biedermann (R-Fredericksburg). He was first elected to the council in 2013, becoming the city’s first Black councilmember, and resigned in 2017 to run unsuccessfully for justice of the peace, losing the Republican primary, 70%-30%.

Quorum Beak Suit: The Texas Supreme Court stayed a district judge’s temporary restraining order preventing the arrest of House Democrats who left the state or otherwise are not present on the House floor under a call of the House. Following the stay, the House voted 80-12 to order the arrests of absent Democrats, and those 52 civil arrest warrants were signed by Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) later in the day. Rep. Lyle Larson (R-San Antonio) was the lone Republican voting nay.
