Deadlines: Today (Monday) was the deadline to register to vote for the November 5 general, constitutional amendment and special elections. It was also the deadline for candidates in the three legislative special elections and local candidates on the general election ballot, where required, to file 30-day-out campaign finance reports.

We expect the legislative candidates’ reports will become available online sometime tomorrow.

SEN: The campaign of U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R) announced he raised $3.2M during the third quarter and has $10.8M on hand. He raised $2.5M during the second quarter. The campaign of Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) announced he raised $545K since he declared his candidacy, and he has $365K on hand.

CD18: Houston resident Whitney Hatter established a campaign committee for a potential challenge of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) as an independent.

CD23 open: El Paso hotelier Alia Garcia-Ureste established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Will Hurd (R-San Antonio) as a Republican. She unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for open CD16 in 2018 (31%).

CD28: The campaign of Democratic challenger Jessica Cisneros announced she raised $310K during the third quarter and has around $300K on hand. U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) had just over $3M on hand as of June 30.

CD31: Round Rock apparel company owner Jon Curtis has suspended his campaign for the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. John Carter (R-Round Rock). “Although my run as a candidate has ended, asking the remaining candidates tough questions as a constituent has just begun,” he tweeted.

Houston: Mayoral challenger Tony Buzbee contributed $2.5M to his campaign – He was its sole contributor. – bringing his total investment to $10M. Buzbee spent nearly $3.5M between July 1 and September 26, and he has $4.2M on hand. Mayor Sylvester Turner raised $733K, spent $2.2M and has $1.6M on hand. Bill King raised $282K, spent $550K and has $263K on hand. He loaned his campaign an additional $200K during the period, bringing his total loan balance to $410K. Council member Dwight Boykins raised $130K, spent $142K and has $58K on hand.

The Houston Chronicle endorsed District E incumbent Dave Martin and Tiffany Thomas for open District F.
