HD120: Rep.-elect Laura Thompson (I-San Antonio) did not qualify for the general election ballot as an independent candidate and thus cannot seek re-election except as a write-in candidate. She has until August 22 to file a “declaration of write-in candidacy” and either a $750 filing fee or a nominating petition signed by 500 district residents.

HD146 open: The Houston Chronicle endorsed Erica Lee Carter, a Harris Co. Department of Education trustee and daughter of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston). Precinct chairs will choose a nominee to replace Rep. Borris Miles (D-Houston) on Saturday.

Dallas Co. Republican Chair: Phillip Huffines, brother of Sen. Don Huffines (R-Dallas), announced he would seek the vacant chairmanship of the Dallas Co. Republican Party. The vacancy was created by the abrupt resignation of Mark Montgomery, who first won the office in the March primary by beating incumbent Wade Emmert. Montgomery’s resignation was originally intended to be effective on August 18. Earlier today, Montgomery made it effective immediately. Former Vice Chair Elizabeth Bingham has also announced her candidacy.

The county party’s executive committee will meet August 18 to select Montgomery’s replacement.

Emmert tweeted that he would not seek the chairmanship. “It was an honor to serve, but my time at the helm is over,” he wrote.
