Commerce: Fewer than 100 people voted early for the January 12 special election to fill a vacant city council position. Six candidates are in the race.

Dallas: Council member Scott Griggs announced he would run for mayor, becoming the seventh candidate to make an official announcement so far. Former Rep. Jason Villalba (R-Dallas) is expected to announce his plans in the next week or two. Griggs has served on the council since 2011 and is term-limited. Council members Philip Kingston, Adam Medrano and Omar Narvaez attended Griggs’s announcement event. The filing period begins January 16.

San Antonio: The city council appointed former council member Art Hall to serve the final five months of William Cruz Shaw’s unexpired term. Hall said he is not planning to run in the May election for a full term. Hall finished fourth in the six-way Democratic primary for HD120 in 2016 (12%). Shaw resigned to accept an appointment to the 436th Judicial District.
