CD21 open: The Joseph Kopser (D) campaign released a poll commissioned by 314 Action showing Kopser trailing Chip Roy (R), 33%-27%, with Libertarian Lee Santos receiving 6%. According to the poll memo, 35% of voters were undecided, including 47% of self-identified “independents.” These numbers reflect the “initial ask.” Respondents were then provided with undisclosed “messages about the candidates,” which predictably narrow the race. Not much other information was provided by Change Research, which produced the poll.

Write-in candidates for offices on the November general election ballot can begin submitting their declarations of write-in candidacy and either a filing fee or sufficient valid signatures on a nominating petition. In general, write-in candidates need at least 500 signatures for a legislative or congressional district and 5K signatures for a statewide office. The deadline to file is August 20.

Laredo: At least five people have filed campaign treasurer appointments with the city secretary to challenger Mayor Pete Saenz: Avelino Juarez, Rosie Lee Rodriguez, council member Charlie San Miguel, former council member Roque Vela Jr., and Randall Walden. Vela, who announced his candidacy today, lost his 2016 re-election bid.
