Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced he would convene a special legislative session on July 8. The two-sentence announcement indicated that specific agenda items would be announced before the session begins. A formal proclamation is needed to call the session, and it must include the specific items the Legislature is expected to address. One of those items is expected to be election-related legislation following the failure of Senate Bill 7 by Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) to pass the House.

HD54: Rep. Brad Buckley (R-Salado) announced he would seek re-election.

Census: Gov. Greg Abbott (R) was among 15 Republican governors signing a letter asking U.S. Commerce Sec. Gina Raimondo to “release redistricting data this month or as soon as possible.” The Census Bureau has said it would release the data in a legacy format by August 15 and in a more user-friendly format by September 30. “The ongoing delay in the release of 2020 Census redistricting data places our states in a nearly impossible situation to redraw lines prior to the 2022 election cycle.” The filing deadline for the 2022 primary is December 13.
