SC8: Gov. Greg Abbott (R) appointed former appellate justice Brett Busby to the seat on the Supreme Court vacated by former Justice Phil Johnson, whose November resignation took effect at the end of 2018. Busby lost his 2018 re-election bid to the 14th Court of Appeals, 51%-49%. The nomination requires Senate confirmation. His seat is up for election in 2020.

Secretary of State: The Senate Nominations Committee did not hold a vote on Secretary of State David Whitley’s nomination for the second week in a row.
McLennan Co.: Sheriff Parnell McNamara (R) announced he would seek re-election. He was first elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016.
