SEN: U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) said he would decide whether he will challenge U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in the next two months. U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-El Paso) is leaning toward challenging Cruz.

GOV: Former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will not run against Gov. Greg Abbott in 2018, per his brother. The Texas Tribune reported that Texas Democratic Party finance chair Mike Collier, who ran unsuccessfully for Comptroller in 2014, is the “most frequently floated gubernatorial candidate.” According to the report, the state Democratic Party is also eying the Attorney General and Agriculture Commissioner races, though no names have yet emerged.

SD2: Dallas resident Kendall Scudder has filed a campaign treasurer appointment to seek the seat held by Sen. Bob Hall (R-Edgewood), likely as a Democrat. Scudder appears to have run unsuccessfully for the Huntsville City Council three times while a current or former student at Sam Houston State Univ. Scudder is the second to file a CTA for a race against Hall, joining Garland atheist activist Aron Ra, also likely a Democrat.
