Early voting continues for the November 2 constitutional amendment, general and special elections.
HD2: Caddo Mills pastor Clyde Bostick announced he would challenge Rep. Bryan Slaton (R-Royse City) in the Republican primary.
HD28: Sugar Land real estate agent Nelvin Adriatico established a campaign committee to challenge Rep. Gary Gates (R-Rosenburg) as a Democrat.
HD51: Austin attorney Lulu Flores announced she would run to succeed Rep. Eddie Rodriguez (D-Austin) if he chooses to run for Congress. Flores unsuccessfully sought the seat in 2002, losing to Rodriguez by 120 votes in the Democratic runoff for what was then an open seat.
HD52: Georgetown engineer Pat McGuinness announced he would run for the seat being vacated by Rep. James Talarico (D-Round Rock), who is running in adjacent HD50. McGuinness, a former Travis Co. Republican Party vice chair, lost a 2010 race for HD50 to then-Rep. Mark Strama (D-Austin), 55%-42%.
HD73 open: Former New Braunfels Mayor Barron Casteel established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat nominally being vacated by Rep. Kyle Biedermann (R-Fredericksburg), who would run in HD19 if he seeks re-election. An attorney, Casteel served two terms as New Braunfels mayor. He is the son of former Rep. Carter Casteel (R-New Braunfels), who served two terms following her election in 2002.
Secretary of State: Gov. Greg Abbott (R) appointed Fort Worth attorney John Scott as Secretary of State. He is subject to Senate confirmation, but that would likely occur in 2023. Scott briefly represented the Trump campaign in a Pennsylvania case but withdrew from the case several days later.
Austin: Attorney Chito Vela announced he would seek run to succeed council member Greg Casar if he ran for Congress. Casar would be required to resign to run for CD35 but would continue to serve until a successor is elected. Vela narrowly lost the 2018 Democratic runoff for HD46 to now-Rep. Sheryl Cole (D-Austin), 51%-49%.
