A few things we wanted to share with you today:

HD12: Rep. Kyle Kacal (R-College Station) announced he would seek re-election. He may be facing a possible general election opponent in College Station resident Gene Perez, who filed a CTA this week. Perez indicated he was seeking a House seat, but he did not indicate whether it is Kacal’s or John Raney’s HD14.

HD23: Former Rep. Lloyd Chris (D-La Marque) has restarted his campaign account, signaling a general election challenge to Rep. Wayne Faircloth (R-Dickinson). Criss represented District 19-B and HD25 from 1979-91. He is the chair of the Galveston Co. Democratic Party and father of Susan Criss, who lost the 2014 general election to Faircloth.

HD54 Open: Harker Heights optometrist Austin Ruiz (R) announced his candidacy for the seat being vacated by Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock (R-Killeen). Ruiz filed his CTA earlier this month and is the first announced candidate in the race. Identifying himself as a conservative Republican, Ruiz said he expects the campaign to be “long and expensive.”

HD118 Open: Gabe Farias filed his CTA to seek his father’s open seat. His website says “major announcement coming soon.” He joins San Antonio attorney Albert Uresti IV, nephew of Sen. Carlos Uresti, as the only announced candidates so far.

CTAs: Three additional campaign treasurer appointments of interest were filed in the last few days:

  • HD18 Open: Huntsville residents James Morrison and James Turner, who join an increasingly crowded field
  • HD73: Fredericksburg resident Kenneth Biedermann. He becomes the second person to file against Rep. Doug Miller (R-New Braunfels), joining Boerne attorney Chris Byrd (R). We are unsure of Biedermann’s party affiliation.

All known candidates, regardless of whether or not they have filed a CTA, are listed in our Crib Sheets
