Dear Subscriber,

Attached please find our analyses of next week’s four runoff elections. Our Special Election Crib Sheet (See link below) has been updated with candidates’ runoff report information.

A few things we wanted to share with you today:

Early voting continues for the SD26, HD13, HD17 and HD123 special runoff elections. In Bexar Co., 4,671 have voted early through two days. This is 53% more than through the first two days of early voting for the January special elections.

Targeting Straight-ticket Votes. Rep. Ron Simmons filed House Bill 1288 today seeking to eliminate the option of straight-ticket voting. In the last decade, several states have either repealed straight-ticket voting or declined to use it in the last general election. Of the 10 states still utilizing it, Texas voters cast more straight-ticket ballots than anywhere else. More than 3 out of every 5 ballots cast in Texas is a straight-ticket vote.

Perry in New Hampshire. Former Gov. Rick Perry kicks off a two-day trip to the Granite State tomorrow at a business roundtable in Bedford, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Patrick Svitek. He will also attend a dinner hosted by the Seacoast Republican Women and a Lincoln Day dinner in Dover. A Bloomberg Politics/Saint Anselm poll released Sunday showed Perry as the “first choice” of 1% of 400 New Hampshire Republican primary voters. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was first at 16% followed by U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (13%), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (12%) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (10%). U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz polled at 3%.
