Governor Perry has set a December 6 date for a special election to replace Sen. Glenn Hegar in SD18. Earlier today, Hegar transmitted to the governor his resignation, effective December 5.

Candidates expected to vie for Hegar’s seat include:

  • Gary Gates, a Richmond real estate investor, who has pledged to spend a significant amount of personal money in the race. Gates lost the 2006 primary to Hegar with 36% of the vote.
  • Charles Gregory, a former mayor pro-tem of Simonton, and
  • Rep. Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham), who had nearly $800K on hand as of June 30.

The very short campaign sprint makes it unlikely that another candidate outside of those listed above could fare well. November 19 is the filing deadline for the SD18 special election. Early voting begins November 26 (Yes, it’s a Wednesday.).
