Reversing this morning’s (Wednesday) reversal, Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) moved back ahead of Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez to claim the second runoff spot by just over 23K votes.

“Though we will not advance to a runoff, we accomplished something great,” Tzintzún Ramirez said in a statement. “I ran as a progressive, as a Latina and as a working mom. We ran this campaign unapologetically, and we all have so much to be proud of for what we’ve accomplished.”

West will face M.J. Hegar in the runoff, and the winner will face U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R) in November.

Turnout: Revised but still unofficial statewide turnout numbers indicate more than 2M Texans voted in each of the Republican and Democratic primaries for the first time in state history. Turnout was roughly 25% of registered voters, which puts Texas in the lower middle of the pack for states holding primaries so far this year, based on very preliminary data.

HD132: In a statement, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) congratulated former Rep. Mike Schofield (R-Katy) on his primary victory, adding he would “look forward to working alongside him to keep Texas the greatest state in the nation.” Abbott had endorsed Angelica Garcia for the Republican nomination to challenge Rep. Gina Calanni (D-Katy).

HD138 open: Josh Wallenstein, who finished third in the Democratic primary, endorsed Akilah Bacy in the runoff.

FEC Nomination: President Trump re-nominated Trey Trainor to be a member of the Federal Election Commission for a term expiring in April 2023. The seat has been vacant since 2017, and it has been short of a quorum since the summer. The commission is designed to have three Democrats and three Republicans. It currently has one Democrat, one Republican and one independent member who votes with the Democrats. Trainor was previously nominated for the position in September 2017. No confirmation hearing was ever scheduled, in part because commissioners are traditionally nominated in partisan pairs.
