Judicial Poll: Incumbents on the Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeals were the top choices of respondents to the State Bar of Texas’s 2020 Judicial Poll (pdf). Chief Justice Nathan Hecht led all candidates with 2,706 votes, nearly 1K more than Democratic rival Amy Clark Meachum. In the only contested Republican primary, incumbent Judge Bert Richardson (R) received 1,323 votes to Gina Parker’s 580, giving him a plurality over the three Democratic candidates, who were led by Elizabeth Frizzell’s 785 votes.
CCA3: The Houston Chronicle endorsed incumbent Judge Bert Richardson (R) for re-nomination in the Republican primary.
SD27: Texas Alliance for Life PAC endorsed Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. (D-Brownsville). Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood Texas Votes endorsed “against” Sen. Lucio but did not endorse either of his primary challengers. Progress Texas endorsed State Board of Education member Ruben Cortez over Sen. Lucio.
HD92 open: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram endorsed Jeff Whitfield for the Democratic nomination for the seat being vacated by Rep. Jonathan Stickland (R-Bedford).
CD13 open: The Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Assoc. PAC endorsed Josh Winegarner to succeed the retiring U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon). Winegarner has served as a government relations professional for the Texas Cattle Feeders Assoc. for the past 14 years.
CD21: The San Antonio Express-News endorsed former Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) for the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Austin).
CD28: The San Antonio Express-News endorsed U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) for the Democratic nomination.
CD32: The Dallas Morning News endorsed Genevieve Collins for the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Dallas).
CD37 “open”: The district doesn’t exist yet, and no one knows what portion of Texas will be included within its eventual boundaries, but it has a candidate for 2022 in Lubbock Army veteran Angel David Martinez, a Democrat.
