Filing for the 2020 primary elections and nominating conventions continues through December 9. We expect this holiday week to be a fairly quiet one, and many party offices will be closed beginning tomorrow (Wednesday).
SC7: Dallas attorney and District Judge Staci Williams filed as a Democrat to challenge Justice Jeff Boyd (R). She was elected to the 101st District Court in 2014 and re-elected in 2018.
SD20: Corpus Christi communication company owner Judy Cutright filed as a Republican to challenge Sen. Chuy Hinojosa (D-McAllen). Cutright unsuccessfully ran in the 2018 special election for CD27 as an independent (<1%).
HD120: San Antonio Army reservist Andrew Vicencio filed as a Republican to challenge Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins (D-San Antonio). He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of San Antonio in 2001 (<1%).
HD121: San Antonio small business owner Jack Guerra filed as a Democrat to challenge Rep. Steve Allison (R-San Antonio).
HD129: Seabrook resident Kayla Alix established a campaign committee for a potential challenge of Rep. Dennis Paul (R-Webster), likely as a Democrat.
CD13 open: Petersburg economic development director Asusena Reséndiz established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) as a Republican. Reséndiz was appointed to the Texas Dept. of Housing and Community Affairs board by Gov. Greg Abbott (R) in 2017.
CD17 open: Waco surgeon Renee Swan established a campaign committee for a potential run for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Bill Flores (R-Bryan) as a Republican.
Houston: Early voting for the December 14 runoff elections begins tomorrow (Wednesday) but does not resume until December 2.
