HD83: New Deal educator and marching band director David Speer announced he was suspending his campaign. “I have not discovered a clear path for me to serve as a Legislator while continuing my treasured career as a public school teacher,” Speer said in a statement. “I believe the best thing for my family, community and the Republican Party is to suspend my campaign while I continue to consider any options prior to including my name on the ballot in March.” Speer, who was challenging Rep. Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) in the primary, added that he hoped “another conservative candidate might rise” to challenge Burrows, and he would “whole-heartedly support such a candidate.”

HD28 special: The Anna Allred campaign announced she raised $159K from 140 contributors and will report having $86K on hand.

HD148 special: Houston council member Ellen Cohen endorsed Michele Leal.

RRC: Dallas attorney Chrysta Castaneda is considering challenging Comm. Ryan Sitton as a Democrat.

CD8: Coldspring real estate agent and San Jacinto Co. Democratic chair Laura Jones established a campaign committee to challenge U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands).

CD12: Primary challenger Chris Putnam announced he raised more than $500K during the first six days of his campaign against U.S. Rep. Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth).

CD17 open: As expected, former U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Dallas) announced he would seek the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Bill Flores (R-Bryan) as a Republican. Sessions, who is originally from Waco, represented a small portion of the district prior to 2002.

CD22 open: Sugar Land attorney Shandon Phan established a campaign committee to seek the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) as a Republican.
